About me

Hi there! I’m Sylvia, and I’m an illustrator living on the sunny island of Singapore. I love painting cute and whimsical characters, and I work with traditional and digital media. I also love making surface patterns and watercolour portraits.

I run a weekly blog called Charcoal Sorbet about four friends who met in an ice-cream shop. that publishes every Saturday. Follow them on their adventures as they share everything from their favourite snacks and hobbies to their mundane life!

Watercolour

My first foray into watercolours was when I discovered that I could use my child's water-based Crayola markers to paint with. I then went on to buy my first proper watercolour set, and the rest was history. Since then, I have also started working with mixed media and digital media.

Inspiration

I often draw inspiration for my illustrations from telling my children what they call “invisible stories” before bedtime, which are often whimsical and sometimes silly. I am also inspired by our frequent travels to Japan.

My favourite themes

I love creating cute animal characters and painting children with whimsical backstories. I also enjoy painting illustrative travel sketches and portraits as well.

My creative life

When I am not painting, I love to knit and crochet, and am also constantly dreaming of translating my illustrations into crochet. Oh, and I also love making knitted costumes for my kids!

Thanks for visiting me!

You can follow me on Instagram if you would like to see more of my illustrations.
